Trademark of ‘Laolongkou’ (Old Dragon Mouth) Attained Patent After One Whole Year’s Hard Work

On May 10th, Unitalen Attorneys at Law reported that the Laolongkou (Old Dragon Mouth), a trademark existent already in the Chinese Qing Dynasty, had won a trademark dispute in Korea, thereby gaining protection of its right in that country. This success demonstrates Chinese enterprises’ drive to learn how to maintain their rights in other countries.

According to Zhang Weihua, Unitalen attorney, Tianjiang Laolongkou Brewage Co Ltd of Shenyang Province planned to apply for Laolongkou trademark registration with words, letters, and pictures in Korea at the end of 2002. Unitalen was fully authorized to act as its legal representative. However, in the course of examination, it was found that many Korean trademark applications imitating Laolongkou words and letters already existed. After sufficient preparation, last May Unitalen put forward trademark disagreement application with the Korean Intellectual property Office. With the applicant’s industrious work to defend its lawful rights, in March the Korean Intellectual Property Office ruled out dismissal of the Korean applicants’ registration applications. Finally, after one year of protraction of the application process, Laolongkou successively defended its trademark rights in Korea.
